With a next-level loyal fanbase and six Netflix specials under her belt, comedian and actress Iliza Shlesinger is popular (like own line of swag popular). Besides the books, podcast, guest hosting, movies and more, this fall Shlesinger has The Get Ready Tour, as she concurrently gears up for her upcoming Amazon Prime stand-up special. We recently caught up with the “Elder Millennial” to discuss her refreshing take on “self-care,” and what a few minutes alone in the bathroom at the end of the day means for this mom-of-two.
What can you tell us about the tour?
This is a really exciting hour. I’ve been working on it for a while. I normally put out a special every year and a half, but I just had my son about five months ago, so I wanted to get myself time to recover from that. I sat with this material for a while. It is nothing but a raucous, outrageous and—make no mistake about it—a polished good time. I think it’s a super-inclusive hour that speaks to a lot of different types of people.
Between all these projects and two young children, how do you make time for yourself at the end of the day?
Literally at the end of the day, or metaphorically?
Literally! How do you step away from it all?
Like a lot of women, it’s that time at the end of the day in the bathroom. Whether you put on a podcast or music, or it’s just silence, it’s the most beautiful sound. I never skip that. I’m hesitant to say “self-care,” because I think that it’s been commodified in a weird way. I always do my dental routine, and I always take care of my face. I can’t say I always shower, but I always take care of my skin at night. And I always work out. Those are the things that I never skip.
Is there anything you like in particular product-wise, or any place you like frequenting for all that good stuff?
Yes. I’m a big believer in natural remedies. When I say that, I say that as like a total novice in this area. I go to a place called Kosha Spa in Sherman Oaks and they do a lot of buccal and Myofascial massage. I’m a big believer in getting in your muscles— working out toxins, stretching, stuff like that. I believe in gua sha, too. I tend to shy away from anything invasive. As a person who talks a lot, it’s always nice to get my jaw rubbed—especially when it’s been clenched for eight hours.
You also had a fragrance launch. Is there anything else in that space that you might be cooking up?
You know what I’m a big fan of: less plastic. I always try to do less plastic. I do think that there are perfect people out there making great strides in health and beauty. I don’t have anything in particular in the works, but I always favor products that at least strive to use less plastic. A lot of times you buy beauty products and what you’re paying for is the beautiful packaging, with like one gram of hyaluronic acid.
Beauty does have that problem. You are wearing a ton of hats right now. Is there any other industry you’d like to break into or anything you’d really love to do?
I’m still trying to break into the industry that I’m in! For me, as an artist, it’s always about evolving and self-expression. I’ve written two books. I’ve written and directed; I’ve acted in movies. My goal is to always keep doing these things. I’d like to dabble in the fitness space as a comedian who genuinely takes fitness very seriously. I think that the one thing missing from the fitness space is comedy, so I hope to get my very strong toe into those waters.
What else are you excited for as you get ready for fall and your tour?
I’m excited to not sweat! I’m excited, like every woman, for the idea of a pumpkin spice latte. To be honest, I’m just so excited to get back out there and be with the fans. I’m excited to not be pregnant and be on tour because that is a slog. I’m just excited to be running this hour and doing it for all the fans and the markets on this tour that we didn’t get to last year.
