To celebrate the launch of KVD Vegan Beauty at Ulta Beauty stores, celebrity makeup artist and the brand’s Cat Eye Ambassador Daniel Chinchilla—he’s the talent behind the killer makeup looks on Ariana Grande, Olivia Cupo and, our favorite, Betty White—is sharing his best liner tips.
Whether you have hooded eyes, have never picked up a liquid liner before or are looking to give your eyes a lift, Chinchilla has a tip for everyone.
“The most important part of eyeliner is to have a steady hand,” says Chinchilla of the ultimate skill to master. “If you can practice the steadiness of your hand, it will be so much easier to apply.”
His tip: Use a liner like KVD Vegan Beauty’s Tattoo Liner ($21), which has a superfine tip, and lay it against your lashes, almost painting the lashes. “Then, gradually give yourself a tiny wing, then build from there.”
Hooded Eye Hack
Chinchilla’s number-one tip for lining hooded eyes is to keep the flick of a cat’s eye only on the outside of the eye. “Instead of bringing the liner in towards the inside of the eye, keep it only on the outside and accentuate the angle up,” he instructs. This will keep the liner from accentuating any heaviness around the eyes.
Line for a Lift
“I love using a brown liquid liner like Tattoo Liner in Mad Max Brown ($21) on more mature eyes,” says Chinchilla. “It gives you the same definition and drama as black, but it’s a little softer. It’s a great way to give your eyes definition without overdoing it.”
“For mature eyes, I like to keep the wing a little softer and pared back because less is more.” To create Chinchilla’s go-to look, trace a superthin line of brown liner against your lashes, then create a soft wing on the outside of your eyes. If the area is a bit wrinkled, Chinchilla says not to be afraid of pulling the skin taut for a perfect wing. “This will create the appearance of a lift, and we all love that.”
