A lot changed for Halsey after the birth of their son in 2021. The 28-year-old pop star recently shared with Nylon that her skin care routine was one of those things. Their secret now? Breast milk.

“I started breastfeeding and I figured out that breast milk is the best skin-care ingredient ever because it’s so full of antioxidants and good fats and stuff that speed up the healing process,” Halsey explains.

This all started out of concern for what she could be exposing her son to.

“I’ve always been really conscious about what goes on my skin,” Halsey says. “But when your baby is kissing you or snuggled up against you, you become hyper-cognizant of what’s on your face.”

Right now, there isn’t that much that can be said on if breast milk is effective for any kind of skin care. There are a few scientific studies that have begun examining how breast milk may work for things like diaper rash and eczema, but they are rare.

More research is needed to know if breast milk can deliver any topical benefits, but Halsey is right that breast milk contains a lot of incredible ingredients. That’s why it’s so nutritious for infants, and why the FDA recommends babies breastfeed exclusively for their first six months of life.

A big potential benefit of breast milk is undoubtedly how safe it is to expose infants to. There are plenty of skin-care ingredients that are safe for adults, but not for small children who are still developing.

If you’re not ready or able to take a plunge into breast milk-based skin care, you might consider Halsey’s other go-to skin care. “I love the Biologique Recherche’s colostrum VG serum, which I got into when I first had my son,” Halsey says.

“Just in general, I love hyaluronic acid,” the singer-entrepreneur continues. “I actually use a French pharmacy hyaluronic acid paste called Laluset. I mix it into serums and face lotion because it has a white cast if you don’t dilute it. I even use it as a lip mask.”

When it comes to taking off makeup post-show or photoshoot, Halsey’s also particular about what she likes. “And I know everyone’s anti-makeup wipe, but they’re good when you’re doing really thick, editorial-type looks. I also always try to break it down with a really simple cleanser like Cerave’s sensitive skin one.”
