Could it be that in the quest to “lose those last five pounds” the answer might come from the way you are wearing your hair? Jerome Lordet, style director at Pierre Michel Salon in New York, says it is, and it’s a question that’s actually asked of him a lot. “Every face is different, but to make your face look skinner without actually losing any weight, there are some go-to tips stylists swear by.”

Use Contrasting Colors

Colorist Delilah Fernandez, also of Pierre Michel Salon, says that when it comes to color, darker hues and colors that contrast against your face can give the illusion of a thinner appearance. “On the other hand, lighter hair will open up the face, creating a fuller appearance,” she says. “I recommend trying ombré, somber, color-blocking, bold highlights or even just a darker color for a slimming effect during your next hair appointment.”

Rely on the High Pony

This is probably the quickest and easiest to-do trick out there. “Put your hair up in a high ponytail,” Lordet says. “This will create the illusion of a slimmer face, because it works like a ‘facelift’ and will pull everything up.”

Believe in the Bounce

If your hair looks “heavy,” Lordet says it will create a “thicker” look. “Aim for bounce and long layers to create a full look, which ‘lifts’ your face.”

Mix a Middle Part With Bangs

Lordet says to try longer, middle-part bangs, as this will open your face like a triangle, while highlighting the middle of your forehead and eyes to create a slimmer appearance. “Just make sure the bangs are cut by the eyebrows and avoid bangs that cut through your face.”

Layer, Layer, Layer

If you have longer hair, cut layers in the front by the cheekbones. “This will cut your cheek in two, and will create the illusion of a thinner face.”

Take You Face Shape Into Account

For longer face shapes, Lordet recommends a side part, as a middle part can accentuate the longer face. “With a rounder face shape, you can create a longer and slimmer illusion with a middle part.”
