I Used a Rodan + Fields System For a Month and Here’s What Happened

The acne struggle is real! And how do I know? Because I deal with it firsthand.

Acne has always been my skin issue. At 37, I don’t really have lines and wrinkles (thanks to Botox and fillers), there’s barely any evidence of sun damage on my skin and dryness isn’t even a concern—it’s the opposite for me, too much oil.

As a beauty guinea pig, I’m constantly trying and testing out new products and treatments, and one such experiment didn’t agree with my skin. A few days after trying out a treatment for the first time, my skin freaked out like a 9th grader in need of a serious dose of Accutane. And of course, I freaked out, too.

Not only were my chin and jawline covered in painful, cystic acne lesions (they showed up on other hard-to-cover-up parts of my face in the coming weeks, too), but my skin was red, too. Makeup wasn’t really doing the trick and the breakouts weren’t subsiding, so I knew it was time for serious intervention.

I frantically arrived at my dermatologist’s office and explained to him what happened. After I got the “you shouldn’t have ever done that to your skin” lecture, he put me on a course of oral and topical antibiotics (I stuck with the topical for awhile merely because the bottle wasn’t empty). And even though it helped with some of the major doozies, the redness was still there and the breakouts kept on coming. So, I decided to do a little investigating and see what else was out there that could help. My skin hadn’t been this bad in years, so in my mind it couldn’t get any worse.

A little Googling and perusing Instagram and I ended up with more search results for Rodan + Fields Unblemish ($171) than I could possibly imagine. The before-and-afters were mindblowing—full-blown cases of acne were magically cured in just a few months with no sign of pigmentation. I just had to give it a try and I’m glad I did.

I followed the instructions explicitly, easing my skin into the regimen (you start off using the products every other morning for one week, then every morning for the second week, then every morning and every other night for the third week, and both morning and night by the end of the month—after the first two weeks I added in some retinol, too). By week three, I started to see a calmness in my skin that hadn’t been there before. It was like one day I woke up and my complexion was smooth and virtually bump-free (minus a few tiny pimples). And, the redness and pigmentation were diminishing, too.

The big sister to the infamous Proactiv line, Unblemish makes use of sulfur and benzoyl peroxide to clear your skin. But, it does it in a way that actually heals it without making it dry or red—genius!

Now that I found something that actually works for my acne-prone skin, I’m sticking with it. For the first time in probably a decade, I’m happy with my skin and may actually venture out one day soon makeup-free.

I use Unblemish daily, along with a few other products, and my skin has NEVER looked this good! My complexion is clearer and more radiant than it looked when I was 10, and I'll be 40 in a month. I am sorry to see that this hasn't been everyone's experience but I know it's not a fit for all. I'll never go back to store brand again - waste of money on products that don't work!

Everyone's skin is different and reacts differently to things. Just because it didn't help one person doesn't mean it won't help another. My sister has always had terrible skin and she tried the Soothe Regimen and didn't like it but she swears by their newest product Active Hydration Serum. Also, a pyramid scheme is when money is exchanged from one hand to another and no one actually makes money. This is network marketing and I can promise if you work at it you make money. Do you make more money by having people under you, yes, but you can also make money by just selling it on your own. My advice, if you don't like something scroll on or unfollow the people who are trying to make a living by sharing products they love.

I used this product line for a year. Biggest mistake. It gave me the worst dry eyes (blood shot!!). My eye doctor said it's probably "something" I was putting on my face! After I stopped using it my eyes cleared but still even a year later my eyes get irritated. I laugh because the only pics you see are of photoshopped consultants. Or people that said "loved this product so much I became a consultant". It's a pyramid scheme selling overpriced junk.

Really....because I used the brightening line and I ended up looking like this person's before picture! It ruined my skin! But, that lesson taught me about looking at the ingredients in skin care products and learned that R&F contained chemicals that overseas are banned. Just like we should pay attention to the foods we eat, we also need to pay attention to the chemicals that we put on our skin and what they could be doing under the surface as they leach into our bodies and affect our systems. I now only use organic skin care and have not found anything better for my health and my skin than Eminence Organic Skin care products.

I agree with the previous poster - the company places far too much emphasis on growing the business and not enough on training "consultants" about the product lines. Essentially, these products are the over the counter version of what you'd get from your dermatologist. My doc did prescribe a sulfur wash and the R+F product is just as good...maybe better because it's gentler and smells better. If used consistently (and I can't emphasize that enough) your skin will look amazing. I've had reps from Chanel and Sisley ask what I use. The only caution is depending on who you buy from you may get hounded. Also, the product line isn't broad enough. Everyone gets bored with the products they use and there's just not enough to keep our interest long term. I'm not into gadgets and they were for awhile - rollers, home microdermabrasion, etc. I heard they pulled the gadgets. Hopefully, they're working on new formulas. Also, no samples with them. That's a bit of a drawback.

I recently started a Rodan + Fields regimen a couple months ago and I am very happy with the results. No compliments yet but I know my skin is looking much better.

I've had rosacea for nearly 20 years. I tried everything.. including products that were significantly more than the RF stuff.. along with laser treatments (thousands of dollars) and prescription topicals from my dermatologist who happens to be a well-known NYC derm (featured on Dr. Oz and the big beauty mags). Nothing worked for me until I tried the Soothe line. What's crazy is that I started getting compliments a few weeks in. I am a believer.

as a professional esthetician for many years with many clients, i checked out this line and yes, found it to be too basic and over the counter results...and did not like the idea that it was marketed multi level...however, that being said, i do have a few clients who have used the anti aging line and their skin looks really good and they love the product!

I used the brightening line and I became the "before" picture. Not having acne, I broke out with small red bumps all over and it took months to get my skin back to health. I tried the product because a friend had started selling it. Unfortunately for her, I had to send it back for a full refund. When I did investigating (which I should have done beforehand), I learned that they use harsh chemicals and ingredients in their products that we shouldn't be putting in or on our bodies (and are banned in some countries). That lesson turned me on to finding natural, organic products that are healthy, good for my skin without harmful chemicals. So, if you want to use these products, look first at what you are actually putting in your body. If you don't like what you see, try an all natural, organic product that can give you the same results without the harmful chemicals like Eminence Organics. After using them to clear up the damage left by Rodan & Fields, I have beautiful, healthy looking skin!

The only draw backs are the constant postings, and messages from 'consultants' wanting you to sign up!!! Constantly talking about the money to be mad... Gets old and has kept me from trying some of the products that in sure would be good fits for me.

Rodan + Fields Unblemish is the # Premium Acne Product in the US. I wish I had it when I was younger, my story is exactly the same as the writer but in addition to antibiotics, I had topical, Acutaine and later had to have the cystic acne burned and cartorized. For those that say anyone can sell, R+F, I am a consultant due to the passion I have to help others with skin care needs, not only did I have terrible acne 2 time periods in my life, I also developed Rosacea and broken capillaries from sun damage. I understand the need to hide for weeks at a time due to ungodly cystic bumps or a red face that people ask, are you ok all the time. As far as anyone can sell it, yes it is a great business opportunity, check out the latest Forbes article but seriously this business has more training opportunities than you can imagine for their consultants so they are equipped, you have an online consultation created by 2 Stanford trained Doctors and we have nurses on staff to address any medical conditions.

The thing you need to remember about the Rodan + Fields line, is that it is not a professional line. It's over the counter, and has very possible contraindications for a lot of people. Anyone can sell it, no license involved, The photos are extremely photoshopped. I would see a licensed Esthetician to get a professional evaluation, and get correct product recommendations that work with your actual skin type, your lifestyle, your diet, and your homecare routine.

Love the Unblemish line that Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields created. Consistency is key when using these products. Use them daily, in the correct order and with that you will most certainly see results!! :) Love that you have!

Hi Elise, I have the same problem that you have. The best thing that happened to me was when I found Cicamed. A Swedish skincare line thats new in USA but well known in Europe. It's organic and it really works. Try the ASD for your acne. It's a lifesaver, instant result. Their Cleanser is the best I've ever tried. That product has won awards for best Cleanser. You get really great and long lasting results. Best Pernilla

I use Unblemish by Rodan+Fields as well. I have cleared my skin, which was formerly covered in bumps, blackheads, and serious hard painful cysts. My skin has never been clearer since using Unblemish. I now can go out confidently without makeup. In fact, I only use Rodan+Fields mineral peptides instead of heavy foundation. I can also proudly say that I am an independent consultant with Rodan+Fields. The business is worth looking into as a way to supplement income. scottrillrandf@gmail.com

I use Unblemish too! It's amazing... Once I started seeing less acne I added Redefine to my routine and now use Unblemish in the AM and Redefine in the PM. Smaller pores and no acne!! :)

Thank you for sharing your journey. I am a Rodan + Fields consultant and prior to being a consultant, I rarely took selfies and I hated looking in mirrors. After having children, my skin just never was the same. ButRodan + Fields Soothe and Reverse truly transformed my skin. In fact, I catch myself smiling back at me in the mirror now instead of looking away. And that's when I realized...Rodan + Fields really is about changing skin and changing lives

I used the unblemish line and had worse breakouts. I was encouraged to keep using it, so I bought the whole regimen again and my face remained in horrible condition so once the second regimen was used up I went to MUCH cheaper brands and my face immediately began to improve. By the way, the "before" picture is NOT cystic acne. I've never in my life met anyone who has "washed away" cystic acne. That's something that has to be dealt with from the inside out, usually caused by a severe hormonal imbalance.
