The Scary Reason Why You Should Stop Using Splenda ASAP

We've seen the studies that show the link between sugar consumption and health and beauty issues, but we realize it's a constant struggle to cut it out of our diets completely (especially if you're a regular soda or coffee drinker). However, there is one type of sweetener you should avoid at all costs: Splenda.
A study published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health revealed that mice that were fed a large dose of sucralose (Splenda is the brand name) daily throughout their lives developed leukemia and other blood cancers. As a result, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) chose to formally recommend that consumers avoid the sweetener altogether.

This comes as big news considering many health organizations have debated the effects of these sugar substitutes for some time, going back and forth between whether or not certain ones are actually safe. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates artificial sweeteners (they call them high-intensity sweeteners) as food additives. To date, the FDA has not had enough scientific information to support changing the status of sucralose to "unsafe."
"This recent publication, although an animal study, supports previous research over the years that our bodies do not efficiently digest and neutralize artificial sweeteners," says celebrity nutritionist Paula Simpson. "The large body of data now available makes this debate on the safety of Splenda hard to ignore."
