Red lips can intimidate even the boldest of personalities. First off, they are daunting to apply, so grab your lip brush because you’ll need it for precise application. Also, in order to know which shade of red best complements your coloring, some investigation and trial and error is usually necessary, especially if you’re a redhead.

The wrong shade, or undertones of red lipstick, on a redheaded woman can cause the complexion to look either washed out or worse, bring out red undertones from the skin. To find the best shade of red lipstick, the shade of your hair has to be taken into account. Enter Max Braun, makeup artist for Youngblood Cosmetics, who shows two perfect examples of what redheads should look for in red lipstick:

For cooler, dark red hair like Julianne Moore’s color (pictured at left), you want more of a blue-based red lipstick. We love Lipstick Queen Saint Eden, $18, which just launched this month. It’s a buildable color that can go from a sheer wash of red to a bold, dramatic look that lasts. Plus, the formula is creamy so it moisturizes, but doesn’t look too shiny.

For warmer, light red hair like Jessica Chastain’s color (pictured at right), look for a red lipstick with orange undertones. Try Youngblood Lipstick in Vixen, $19 for a matte, bold look that will instantly brighten your look.
