Hair Color That Complements Your Complexion

Finding a hair color that suits your skin can be difficult, but understanding the fundamentals can make it much easier.

As a general rule of thumb, if your skin tone is cool, your hair color should be, too (e.g. pale or platinum blonde, burgundy, dark brown, and jet black); and if your skin is warm, your hue should be warm as well (e.g. golden blonde or brown, copper, auburn, strawberry blonde, and caramel). However, there are plenty of women who are an exception to the rule and look great in a variety of hair colors. The ultimate goal is selecting a shade that doesn’t fight with your skin tone.

To figure out if your skin tone is warm or cool, look at the veins in your arm in a good light. If they appear to have a green tint, then your complexion is warm; if they’re more of a bright blue, then your skin tone is cool.

Not everyone falls strictly into one category. Some people have skin tones that are a combination and fall on the border, which is why they can pull off warm or cool hair colors. (Lucky!)

If you’re having trouble determining which hues work well with your complexion, ask a trusted, experienced colorist to help you pick your perfect shade.
