Beautyblenders are so well-known in the makeup world that the brand name is often used interchangeably with “makeup sponge.” However, not all makeup sponges are created equal. While you can find sponges just about anywhere, they don’t come with the same reputation or guaranteed performance as the original Beautyblender. The brand was founded in 2003 by makeup artist Rea Ann Silva, and it’s safe to say it leads the charge in the sponge category.

Flawless application is its trademark, but nailing that perfect blend requires knowing how to use it right. Fortunately, Silva recently spoke to The Sun about the most common mistakes people make with their Beautyblenders—essential reading for anyone who owns or plans to own one.

Your Beautyblender needs to be damp

“Always apply your foundation with a damp Beautyblender,” Silva told the outlet. “People forget to wet their Beautyblender, but it’s so important. This will melt the product into your skin and help you achieve a gorgeous, natural look.” Not only does using it damp help achieve that airbrushed look, but it also absorbs less product. That’s why the founder stresses: “Don’t use dry. Don’t waste your makeup.” Silva explains, “Just like your skin, you have to hydrate your Beautyblender,” she says. “Always use it damp,” adding that you should wet it and squeeze out the excess water before applying product to your skin.

Master the ideal technique

Silva suggests a specific application technique for the best results. “Don’t drag your skin and don’t drag your Beautyblender, especially around the eyes,” she says, recommending you “bounce, bounce, bounce,” aka, tap it into your skin to apply and blend it instead of dragging it or swirling it like you might with a traditional makeup brush.

Prep your skin before foundation

“It’s very important to have prepped, balanced skin before applying complexion products,” she adds. This prevents creasing and cakiness, and helps your makeup last longer throughout the day. I like to use SPF under my foundation—something light. If you struggle with skin texture, using a makeup primer helps even your skin texture and increase longevity.”

Clean your Beautyblender regularly

As stated on the brand’s website, your Beautyblender needs “light and air to avoid growing mold.” They recommend using the lid of your sponge canister as a drying pedestal for your damp sponge when not in use. For a more official drying station, Amazon has plenty of aesthetically pleasing options.

While it might not be realistic for everyone, the brand recommends washing your Beautyblender after every use, as mentioned in its blog. Silva emphasizes this in her interview: “Wash your Beautyblender with our Blendercleanser after using [it] to prevent bacterial growth and to increase the longevity of your sponge.” One of its most popular cleaners is the Blendercleanser Solid, which you simply rub your sponge over the top of to create a lather, rinse, squeeze, and repeat, then set it to dry on the silicone mat it comes with. Easy!
