In the music video for her new song “The Boy Is Mine,” Ariana Grande sported two cat-eye makeup looks as she created a love potion then broke into the apartment of a mayor played by Penn Badgley. Grande created both makeup looks herself, and shared a behind-the-scenes look at her application technique.

A recent Youtube video from Grande’s brand r.e.m. Beauty shows how Grande applied her makeup for the video using products from the brand. For the first half of the video, in which Grande’s character is concocting her potion, she went with soft rosy makeup with fluffy false lashes.

To get the look, Grande dabbed a generous amount of r.e.m. beauty interstellar highlighter topper in “miss mercury” ($25) onto the tip of her nose, creating a button-nose effect. She uses a pink shade from her midnight eyeshadow palette ($25) to add dimension to her creases, then applies a charcoal shade along her upper lash line, creating the effect of eyeliner.

After applying mascara and false lashes, Grande traces over the line she created with the charcoal shadow with her brand’s liquid eyeliner marker. “I know this is insane, but I am going to mix three glosses,” she says in the video, before revealing her lip combo: r.e.m. beauty on your collar plumping lip gloss ($17) in “pink razor” and “jelly sandals,” and essential drip glossy balm ($19) in “skinny dripped.”

For the second part of the video, Grande’s hair goes from light to dark and she dons a skin-tight catsuit, and her makeup becomes more dramatic. To “bump up [her] cat makeup,” Grande used the same charcoal eyeshadow and liquid liner to extend the wing she created on her upper lash line and glued on black rhinestones. She applied the essential drip glossy balm, this time in the bright pink “strawberry soda” shade.

If you’re into Ariana Grande’s signature cat eye makeup, you can watch the video and follow along with the steps she took to get into character for “The Boy Is Mine.” With two full looks, it provides the blueprint for a complete day-to-night transition.
