For years, women have looked to fillers to augment the size and shape of their lips. Many of these uses were considered off-label—that is until the FDA began approving the use of hyaluronic acid fillers in the lips and adding it to the list of safe and intended uses.
Today, the FDA granted approval to global pharmaceutical company Allergan for the injectable Juvéderm Volbella XC in the lips for lip augmentation, as well as the correction of wrinkles around the mouth (known as perioral rhytids). During clinical trials, it was demonstrated to increase fullness in the lips and soften lines around the mouth through one year.

“Juvéderm Volbella will offer patients soft and full lips and correction of the fine lines with the first FDA-approval for this indication to last up to one year,” says San Fransisco dermatologist Vic Narurkar, MD. “The same technology, which revolutionized how we treat the midface with Juvéderm Voluma, can now be utilized to achieve unique mold ability and softness in the lips and fine lines with longer duration, which patients have been seeking. It truly will be a game changer.”
Bill Meury, chief commercial officer for Allergan, says, “This approval brings to market a product unlike anything that is currently available in the United States. Juvéderm Volbella XC is formulated with Vycross2, a proprietary filler technology from Allergan, which yields smooth products that have been engineered to address specific patient concerns such as lip fullness, age-related volume loss in the cheek area, or perioral rhytids.”
