When Deep Conditioner Turns From Friend To Foe

When Deep Conditioner Turns From Friend To Foe featured image

The purpose of conditioning treatments is to infuse hair with much-needed moisture so it looks and feels healthier, right? But, if your strands are naturally thin or limp and you use too heavy a conditioning agent, it may “stick” to your hair, leaving it a greasy mess, wash after wash.

According to New York celebrity hair stylist Antonio Prieto, treatments should be prescribed according to texture, color, condition, density, and health so that hair isn’t left weighted, greasy, or limp. Basically, conditioning treatments are not one size fits all. So what do you do when over-conditioning leaves your hair goopy?

In the event that you hair looks oily, a deep cleanse with an anti-residue shampoo should be used to clarify the hair, like Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo ($8).

But keep in mind, it’s important to not wash oily hair too often. You want to train your scalp to produce less sebum (oil) and the more you wash your hair, the more sebum your scalp thinks it needs to produce to compensate. At the very most, aim to wash your hair every other day. In the meantime, try a hair powder like new Redken Powder Grip 03 ($15), which will extend the life of a blow out and help create volume in dry hair.
