Distracted driving is obviously not good—or, more importantly, safe—driving. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than eight people are killed and 1,161 injured in crashes that reportedly involve a distracted driver in the U.S. every day.
And, while it’s not exactly news that a lot of states have cracked down on how cell phones play into that equation, the state of New Jersey is about to get really serious about it—and your favorite beauty product may be part of what they are pinpointing.

Under a new proposed bill, the state legislature is calling to prohibit “ANY activity unrelated to the actual operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that interferes with the safe operation of the vehicle on a public road or highway.”
While the proposal doesn’t specifically call out things like drinking coffee or applying mascara, those two acts would be punishable (as in the tune of $200–$400 fine for the first offense, $400–$600 for a second offense, $600–$800 for a third or subsequent offense, and a 90-day license suspension beyond that) if the bill goes into play, because pretty much anything that involves taking your hands off the wheel would fall under the bill.
