Between her internet-breaking pop hits and her iconic, dance-packed on-stage performances, Tate McRae is so in her element it's hard to believe she's only 20 years old. Having made her start as a dancer on shows like So You Think You Can Dance at just 13, McRae has been in the spotlight pretty much her entire life.
As someone who struggled with acne from an early age, its hard to imagine being under that kind of public scrutiny during such formative and confusing years, and as the singer/songwriter revealed in an interview with Byrdie this week, her path to clear skin has been a complicated journey.

As someone who danced and performed for years, I can tell you first hand that sweating under stage makeup does no favors for your skin, and McRae reiterated the sentiment to Byrdie, explaining that "it's been a process with my skin. I went through a lot of skin issues last year when I was doing six performances back to back, and [had] makeup caked on my face so many days in a row."
What did the "Exes" singer do the remedy the breakouts, then? For her, the answer was lifestyle changes. "I've been trying to clean up my diet and make it a lot less processed, and [eat] more whole foods and organic, which obviously helps my skin. A simple routine is best for me. When I try to put too many steps into my routine, that's usually when my skin starts to go crazy."
While her whole-food diet has done wonders for her skin and hair, there are some brands she swears by for keeping things in tip-top shape, particularly her long brunette strands. "I use a lot of Olaplex and K18. And then I also use this root-strengthening and cleansing spray after the shower," she told Byrdie. "Using heat protection before you do your hair is very important."
