The next generation of makeup features a multifunctional, “skin-first” focus.

Fresh Take

“These days, everyone is all about glowy, minimalistic makeup,” celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg says. “People aren't interested in using products that will clog their pores or damage their skin, so we’re seeing a big shift toward skin-loving ingredients in makeup. I think it’s amazing that people are expecting more from their makeup for healthy, happy skin.”

The no-makeup makeup look is trendier than ever, especially this time of year. “Choosing makeup with nourishing skin-care ingredients allows the skin to breathe and lets you achieve the ultimate natural look,” adds celebrity makeup artist Ermahn Ospina. “We want to look our best while taking care of our skin at the same time.”

Trend to Try: Skin Tints

One of the biggest products sweeping this hybrid category is the skin tint, which has also become a TikTok sensation, with more than 250 million views of #skintint content. Greenberg says these formulas are often thinner in texture and offer less coverage than tinted moisturizers and foundations. They also contain a variety of good-for-the skin ingredients. “They feel more like a serum on the skin and provide the lightest sort of coverage you can get, but they’re great for dewy, natural looks,” she explains.

Ospina adds that the primary goal of skin tints is skin-care benefits, with makeup pigments being secondary. “When it comes to foundations and tinted moisturizers, makeup is their first priority, and skin care is second,” he explains.

To apply a skin tint, celebrity makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan says you can use a brush or a damp sponge, but she thinks it’s actually best applied with clean fingers. “Skin tints are super blendable, and the warmth from your fingers will help them melt perfectly and evenly into your skin.”

3 Tints We Love:

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 ($48)

All three experts rank this one supreme, highlighting attributes such as its “gorgeous, glowy finish” and “great color selection” (it comes in 30 shades), as well as its ability to “improve blemishes and redness.”

Iris&Romeo Best Skin Days SPF 30 ($48)

Though it’s not the liquid-like skin tint we’re used to, Deenihan says “it’s so lightweight, you won’t believe you’re wearing makeup. It’s the most sheer coverage in my kit, but it leaves skin fresh and radiant because it contains sodium hyaluronate and vitamin C.”

Beekman 1802’s Milk Tint SPF 43 ($48)

A new, sun-kissed spin on the brand’s best-selling Milk Primer, this buildable tint comes in six shades that adapt to suit every skin tone. Utilizing squalane, elderberry and soothing goat milk, it reduces the look of large pores and helps even out blotchy skin.
