If you’ve had a cosmetic procedure recently, or are planning one in the future-be it a facelift, tummy tuck, breast augmentation or even injections-you might want to turn to your fridge for faster healing. Turns out, certain foods can help your bruising and recovery, big time.

A study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that a nutrient combo including bromelain, vitamin C and grapeseed extract cut down patients’ facelift recovery time by 17 percent. While the study focused on supplementation, you can get these nutrients from whole foods with ease. So which foods contain these powerhouse healers and how do they work? Good question.

Bromelain can be found in juicy pineapple. The enzyme has been shown to calm inflammation and act as a “clean up agent,” digesting dead skin cells to help injuries heal smoothly.

Vitamin C, found in high concentrations in orange and red fruits like bell peppers, citrus and papaya, helps cell turnover and to form new collagen.

Grapeseed extract, found best in supplement form, has been shown to protect vitamin C from oxidation, allowing it to enter, and thus strengthen, cell membranes.
