Pantone’s 2026 Color of the Year has taken some by surprise (it’s the first time a shade of white has ever been chosen), but we can’t say we’re shocked—PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer, a “billowy white,” looks nearly identical to one of the most popular manicure colors of the last few years, most commonly referred to as milky white.

Cloud Dancer is "a lofty white neutral whose aerated presence acts as a whisper of calm and peace in a noisy world," the company says. "[It] symbolizes a calming influence in a society rediscovering the value of quiet reflection." The neutral white is "imbued with serenity, it invites true relaxation and focus, allowing the mind to wander and creativity to breathe." Between the usual madness of the holiday season, a nonstop news cycle and our collective scrolling time only going up, it makes perfect sense that the Pantone team would choose a hue that represents a “blank slate” and refresh for the new year.
A 'Cloud Dancer' Manicure
A “Cloud Dancer” manicure falls right into the clean-girl nail aesthetic that continues to be a dominant salon request across the country. The common thread across trends like glazed nails, milky white nails, soap nails, naked nails and lip-gloss nails is that they all play up subtle neutral shades for a your-nails-but-better look. Some, like soap and lip-gloss nails, lean pink; glazed nails emphasize a pearly finish. Cloud Dancer nails are a neutral white—not too warm and not too cool.
Celebrity manicurist Stephanie Stone (her clients include Charli XCX, Addison Rae, Alison Brie and Michelle Monaghan, to name a few) says Cloud Dancer is the “perfect color to welcome in 2026” because it’s a “gorgeous neutral to be paired with any pop of color you can think of. The beauty in this shade is its versatility!” Stone’s polish recommendations include Sally Hansen Cuddle Puddle [shown below] for a “chic and solid mani.” For a little more sparkle, she suggests Sally Hansen Moonlight Mist or Silk I. “They’re the perfect shimmery twists on the Pantone shade,” she says.
