The mullet has always marched to the beat of its own drum. Blending the edge of a cropped pixie with the volume of a layered blowout, it’s never been demure. Once embraced by artists and musicians for its shock factor, the style long felt niche, but that’s no longer the case. The latest version, affectionately dubbed the modern mullet, is all about shape and wearability. It’s becoming a red carpet go-to across generations while gaining major traction on TikTok. Ahead, two celebrity hairstylists break down everything to know about this ultra-chic update to the classic style.

What Is the Modern Mullet?

Contrast is central to any mullet. While the original cut leaned into stark, mismatched elements, the modern version approaches that contrast with intention. “You still have that shorter, more structured style in the front paired with length in the back, but it’s softer, more blended and highly customizable,” says celebrity hairstylist and L’Oréal Pro Global Creative Contributor Min Kim.

In other words, the shape feels less rigid. Gone are the chunky layers and bulky texture. Instead, it's tailored to flatter your features. “Think face-framing pieces and a lived-in look that’s wearable,” says celebrity hairstylist Nick Stenson.

Individuality and personalized styles are dominating beauty trends across social media and red carpets, and experts say that’s fueling the cut’s rise. “This mullet feels bold and expressive, but it’s also surprisingly versatile, which is exactly what people want right now,” says Stenson.

Nostalgia plays a role, too. “Everything old always cycles back, and the modern mullet is a very elevated remix of a classic cut. It also works beautifully with natural texture, which aligns with the industry’s shift toward low-effort, lived-in hair,” she adds.

What to Ask for at the Salon

Despite its effortless vibe, this cut requires precision. Bringing a photo of the exact style is your best bet for achieving the modern mullet of your dreams. “You also need to be very clear about your expectations and how bold you want to go,” says Kim. Details like length and how you plan to style it daily are just as important.

While the modern mullet thrives on customization, the shape should still feel intentional. “Asking for a soft-cut mullet with blended layers and a tailored length to fit your face is a good place to start,” says Stenson. Ultimately, the cut should fit seamlessly into both your lifestyle and personal style.

How to Maintain the Modern Mullet

Yes, the modern mullet is relatively low-maintenance, but it’s not completely carefree. Regular trims are key to preventing it from looking overly shaggy. “The layers need to be maintained to keep the shape looking fresh,” says Stenson, who recommends booking an appointment every six to eight weeks.

Between visits, styling makes all the difference. "Texture is everything with this haircut, and the cut looks best when it feels a little undone," says Kim. Texture spray can help create that "disheveled, lived-in finish," while a lightweight smoothing cream adds shine and subtle volume without weighing it down. When it comes to drying, Stenson suggests air-drying whenever possible. Those with curly or textured hair may prefer using a diffuser to minimize frizz.
