Lining your lids is one of the quickest ways to create a dramatic look, but lining them wrong could lead to a big problem with your eyes.
According to a study published by the Eye & Contact Lens: Science and Clinical Practice journal, lining the inside of your lash line not only causes your makeup to wear off faster, but it also irritates your eyes.
That’s because when applied to the inside of your lids, eyeliner “migrates” into the tear film, which is the liquid surrounding your cornea. When the eyeliner particles flake into the tear film, it can cause increased sensitivity, irritation, blurred vision and even infection. (And if you wear contacts, the liner can attach to them.)
Often, eyeliner pencils and wands go unwashed, so they breed bacteria. Be sure to clean the tip or sharpen it before applying to decrease the risk of infection.
And, if you’re worried about the appearance of liner applied to the outside of your eyelids as opposed to inside the lash line, consider this: The study showed liner applied on the inside the rim wore off within ten minutes, while liner applied just outside the lash line stayed in place much longer.
Eliminating the risk of infection and constant reapplication are certainly worth a new liner look, don’t you think?
