How Alcohol Can Agitate Your Skin

A few reasons you may want to cut back on the booze.

We’ve heard about studies that say a little bit of alcohol, like red wine, is good for the heart. However, it can also wreak havoc on your skin, especially if you’re susceptible to certain conditions like psoriasis or rosacea. As we look forward to the weekend, here are a few reasons you may want to cut back on the booze.

Dullness: Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it causes you to lose more fluids than you’re taking in. This lack of internal hydration can eventually show on your skin, making it look dull and unhealthy.

Redness: Alcohol dilates blood vessels and can cause the skin to become flushed and cause rosacea symptoms to worsen. While red wine is the No. 1 culprit, one drink of any type of alcohol can trigger a flare-up.

Under-eye circles: We’re not accusing anyone here, but too many nights of drinking in smoky bars will really show up on your skin…most notably with under-eye circles and puffiness, due to dehydration.

Psoriasis and eczema: Some experts believe that alcohol increases the body’s production of candida, a yeast that may cause psoriasis and eczema symptoms to flare up.

A good measure is to take notice of how your skin feels after you’ve downed a glass or two. You might be surprised to find that many of your skin woes can be calmed by simply opting to be designated driver. So before you enjoy your next glass of wine or martini, think of your skin first.
