How To Find The Right Hair Color For Your Skin Tone

Taking the guess work out of choosing your color

Finding that just right shade of color that works with—not against—your skin tone isn’t as hard as it may sound. Going beyond basic blond, brunette or red hues, your color should be multidimensional so it shines from all angles. In order to know what to ask for, you need to know how to find the right shade for you based on your skin tone.

If your skin is cool, stick with colors that are cool, too. Warmer skin tones tend to look best in warmer hues. And then there are those lucky women you can go either way and both tones look good.

To determine what will look best on you, first start by choosing your main color family: red, brown, black or blond. Then, select the tone based on your skin tone (cool or warm).

Cool skin tones have more of a bright blue undertone in the veins in their arms; warm tones have a green tint. Cool skin tones can pull off jewel tones like deep browns and pale blonds—going too golden will make skin look washed out or red and dull. Warm skin tones, which have a natural yellow or gold to them, look good in golden, copper, amber and auburn hues. The warm tones complement the skin and give it a healthy glow.
