Emerald is the official birthstone of May, the month of late spring's burst of fresh greenery. Emerald's rich blue-green-to-pure-green hue reflects new growth and is also reminiscent of the lushest landscapes. (There's a reason Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle.)

According to the Geological Institute of America (GIA), emerald green has "soothed souls and excited imaginations since antiquity," and even today is "known to relieve stress and eye strain." Throughout history, lore and legend placed a high value on the gem. Some believed emerald wearers could "foresee the future," "reveal truth," "cure diseases," "make one an eloquent speaker" and were "protected against evil spells." Cleopatra was also known to have a passion for emerald, and used it in her royal adornments, says the GIA.
