According to the experts, there are plenty of good reasons why braided ponytails trend year after year.
"Braided ponytails are having a major moment because they blend classic elegance with modern edge," says celebrity hair stylist and senior stylist at BENJAMIN Salon New York, Eddie M. Parra. "Braids are a timeless styling element that can be reimagined in countless ways—whether it’s a sleek single braid, bubble braids or accent braids woven into ponytails. They’re versatile, practical and playful, which makes them a go-to for both casual and red carpet looks."
At the same time, the trend pulls on our nostalgia for the Y2K styles that are dominating right now.
"Braided ponytails are bold but wearable, they combine practicality with drama," explains celebrity hair stylist and Color Wow ambassador, Giles Robinson. "With the Y2K and festival style revivals, people love the nostalgic vibe of a braid, but elevated into something high fashion or editorial. Plus, it’s a great go-to for heatless styling days."
According to professional hair stylist and content creator Jeremy Pugh, it's that practical, wearable element that helps makes this trend so popular. They can be sleek or undone, polished or playful, and they work across all hair types so everyone can try them," he says. "You’re seeing them everywhere from runways to red carpets to TikTok because they create structure and drama without needing a full glam moment. Plus, they double as a protective style, so they’re not just 'trendy' but they’re also practical too."
Keep Your Braided Ponytail Super Sleek
A popular take on the braided ponytail is a sleek, slicked back style which means taking the time to tame your flyaways before you start braiding.
"It really comes down to how you prep the hair," Pugh notes. "I always recommend using a lightweight product that smooths without adding hold. IGK Mistress Hydrating Hair Balm ($29) is a great option because it tames frizz and keeps the hair soft and touchable, which helps everything stay clean while braiding. You don’t want anything crunchy or sticky, just something that gives you that silky control."
When you're ready to braid, Parra recommends having a wax on-hand to get those stubborn flyaways along the way. "To achieve a polished finish, I recommend Sally Hershberger’s 24K Superiority Complex Texturizing Wax ($40)," he says. "As you braid, keep a firm grip on the hair and lightly dab the wax onto your fingertips. Smooth it gently along the braid as you work—this technique tames flyaways and adds a beautiful shine without weighing the hair down or making it stiff."
And finally, consider reaching for a finishing spray that seals split ends. "I use Color Wow Pop & Lock High Gloss Finish ($24) to create this look. It smooths frizz instantly without making hair greasy or stiff," Robinson explains. "Work a tiny bit through your fingers and glide down the braid for that sleek, polished finish."
Tips to Keep Your Braid Looking Full
If you're looking to beef up your braided ponytail with some extra volume, there are plenty of routes to go.
"One of my favorite tricks to make a braid look fuller is 'pancaking,' which is when you gently pull apart each section of the braid to add volume and dimension," Pugh says. If you’re working with fine or slippery hair, I love using Sexy Hair Powder Play ($22) before pancaking. It adds texture and grip so the braid holds its shape and looks way thicker than it actually is."
"Consider adding synthetic hair extensions for extra length and density," Parra adds. "This is a great trick for both everyday glam and special events."
