TikTok creators fancy themselves theorists often coming up with niche conclusions. The newest hot take is the blue nail theory, following in the wake of the viral red nail theory. We asked professional nail artists what the theory is really all about and whether or not they think it’s real.

What is the blue nail theory?
Manicurist and Morgan Taylor ambassador Morgan Haile says TikTok users have spun blue nails, most often light blue, “into a fun and lighthearted way to signal that someone is taken or in a relationship.” There are two takes that are somewhat intertwined. The main theory is that women in a relationship often wear blue nail polish whether purposely or subconsciously. The other complimentary theory is that men will often select blue nail polish if their partner asks them what color to get.
Is there any truth to the blue nail theory?
While experts gave some merit to the previous red nail theory, they question the validity of the blue nail theory. “I find no truth in this theory other than it being fun and entertaining,” says celebrity manicurist and KISS brand ambassador Gina Edwards. Yet, now that it’s becoming more well known, she does find “that people who are single and don't want to be approached wear blue as a low-key signal that they are not ready to start dating.” On a personal note, I will say my fiancé does often recommend blue polish when I ask what color to get, but I think that might just be boy brain.
