Bold, daring and colorful designs may be the star look of your manicure moodboard, but there’s immense power in a natural look too. Chic, underrated and refined, neutral nails never disappoint or go out of style. However, for deep complexions, neutral nail colors aren’t always easy to come by—they either skew too ashen or lack the warmth needed to enhance the skin’s natural radiance. Luckily, finding a stylish shade isn’t impossible, especially when you have the keen eye of experts. Ahead, three manicure professionals weigh in on the best neutral nail colors for deep and dark skin tones.

  • Amy Lin is a celebrity manicurist and the founder of Sundays
  • Rebecca Isa is the creative director for Zoya
  • Karyna Kyliushyk is a nail artist in Miami

How to Choose the Best Neutral Nail Polish for Deep Skin Tones

Settling on a neutral nail color has its challenges for melanated skin tones. For one thing, Black and brown skin is diverse; there isn't just one natural shade. When it comes to deep complexions, finding a hue that is soft and complementary to your undertone is key. True nude polishes tend to be too light and can appear washed out, while black can be too harsh. “The most flattering neutrals are the ones that enhance your natural warmth and reflect light beautifully rather than disappearing,” says Rebecca Isa, creative director for Zoya.

”Pale, washed-out nudes simply don't work on darker skin. You need color with substance and saturation,” says Miami nail artist Karyna Kyliushyk. So, instead of gravitating toward typical nude or light colors, the pros recommend opting for a shade that strikes that perfect balance between neutral and natural. According to Isa, there’s a strong shift toward refined neutral nails with finishes that add color and are also fitting with current trends.

Ivory Mocha

According to Lin, mochas with a hint of cream or off-white are the ideal neutral shade. She explains this type of color adds contrast without washing you out, creating an intentionally elegant look.

Blush

Winter is the perfect time to lean into the squeaky-clean soap nail trend. To recreate the look, the Isa suggests opting for a light blush polish. The color has a subtle hint of color while still being neutral enough for the trend. Two to try: Zoya Rue ($14), Manucurist Pale Rose ($14)

Espresso

Reach for a dark, near-black brown when you want to serve sophisticated drama. According to Kyliushyk, shades like espresso deliver an expensive look that lighter neutrals can't achieve. Two to try: Aprés Deja Brew ($15), Gel Care Espresso ($20)

Mauve

If you like the look of lighter colors but want to try something unique, consider a mauve manicure. "The subtle hints of pink and brown keep the shade well balanced so it doesn't read ashy or pale," says Lin. A semi-translucent polish adds to soft effect. Two to try: Essie Princess Charming ($15), Gitti Silky Mallow ($20)

Dolphin Gray

Gray-leaning manicures are having a moment right now, thanks to Demi Lovato's dolphin skin look. "It's the perfect shade for creating that balance between neutral and statement-making and isn't too dark," says Kyliushyk. Two to try: Olive & June AW ($10), Sally Hansen Gorgeous Granite ($9)

Opalescent Pink

"A sheer, opalescent pink is especially flattering on darker complexions because it plays with light rather than masking the natural nail color. Think of it like your favorite naked manicure with a reflective twist," says Isa. Two to try: Ella + Mila My Fantasy ($11), Ruth Luna ($10)

Clay

Clay is a neutral shade that is often overlooked. But the earthy hue is one of the few that complements the spectrum of melanated skin tones, thanks to its warm undertones. Two to try: Dazzle Dry Argyle ($22), J.Hannah Saltillo ($22)
