Sunscreen is an essential part of preventing skin cancer, but a recent internal review of popular SPF brand, Banana Boat, revealed that some of their products may be unintentionally doing the opposite.
The internal review of Banana Boat products found that multiple samples of the popular Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen SPF 30 contained trace levels of benzene, a classified human carcinogen. The maker of Banana Boat SPF—Edgewell Personal Care Co.—has now issued a nationwide recall of three different batches of the spray product. The affected products have expiration dates in December 2022, February 2023 and April 2024.

In light of the recall, Edgewell made a point to assure consumers that benzene is not an ingredient in Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen SPF 30, but rather that "unexpected levels" of the cancerous element were found in the spray upon review, CNN Business reports. Banana Boat is now encouraging consumers to dispose of all affected products and offering reimbursements for any customers impacted by the recall.
