Celebrity makeup artist and founder of her eponymous cosmetic line, Trish McEvoy is a major player in the beauty arena (if you haven’t tried one of her makeup brushes, add it to your wish list pronto). Her collection spans makeup, skin care, bath and body, and fragrance—OK, accessories too—and her work has been idolized since the 1970s. Her new book, The Makeup of a Confident Woman, details some of her favorite tips and tricks to help women achieve an easy, sophisticated beauty look in less time.
In an interview with Good Morning America, McEvoy addresses the common reason why women say they don’t wear makeup, or wear it well: they don’t have time. “It’s all about women taking the time to really get into the moment—how much time you have and how many products you want to use. But it can all be so simple—it’s about being organized and taking the steps, taking that time for yourself, it’s a game changer. You say you don’t have the time, but you have to take it. We waste a lot of time. My book gives tips depending on your need and the time you have. Taking five minutes to make up your face. It’s all a matter of knowing what to do and it can be so easy.”
When asked what part of the face should you not skip when applying makeup, McEvoy answered “skin” and stressed the importance of a strong base for the rest of your routine. “Skin, absolutely your skin,” she said. “You should use a BB cream that gives you coverage, and SPF protection. You want your skin to be healthy.”
Another key tip for maximizing your makeup application: apply your face makeup last. It sounds strange because most of us start with foundation, but McEvoy has something different in mind, and it makes perfect sense. “When you put makeup on your eyes, some of the product will fall onto your face,” she says. “If you already have foundation and concealer on, you’re going to have to reapply that. So it’s just easier not to have the foundation and concealer there in the first place.”
