A Minute With

1.
WHAT SETS MY PRACTICE APART
Fortunately, living in the Bay Area I am in the heart of many of the companies that are developing the latest lasers and devices and I am frequently called on to try out these machines, therefore, we have a myriad of technologies available in our office—for each concern we frequently have two or three ways to improve it and we can create a tailored plan with a synergy of treatment options to provide better results with less recovery time
2.
THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT MY FIELD
People often come in wanting to do everything they can to avoid surgery because they think to have plastic surgery means to look “pulled” or “fake,” but I often tell them the only plastic surgery you notice on others is bad plastic surgery; if the procedures are done correctly you should not even notice that someone has had “work” done
3.
MOST MEMORABLE PATIENT REACTIONS
It’s very rewarding to see a patient’s confidence and beauty shine through following surgery
4.
WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY PROFESSION
I love the relationship I have with my patients, whether it is taking care of them through a stressful time, such as surgery, or starting a lifelong partnership with noninvasive treatments— our patients become like family in our practice
5.
WHAT I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT
No matter where I go, whether on vacation or to speak at plastic surgery meetings, I never leave home without my topical vitamin C serum and sunscreen
6.
WHEN TO CONSIDER A FACELIFT
I tell patients when you wake up every day and the first thing you do is look in the mirror and try to pull the skin up with your fingers to get rid of that skin—when you can’t look in the mirror without doing that—then it is time for surgery
7.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
No matter where I go, whether on vacation or to speak at plastic surgery meetings, I never leave home without my topical vitamin C serum and sunscreen
8.
WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE CONSIDER A FACELIFT?
I tell patients when you wake up every day and the first thing you do is look in the mirror and try to pull the skin up with your fingers to get rid of that skin—when you can’t look in the mirror without doing that—then it is time for surgery
9.
HOW DO YOU STAY UP TO DATE ON NEW TECHNIQUES?
I am frequently invited to lecture at facial plastic surgery conferences and it’s great to speak with my colleagues and hear about their latest experiences with the newest technologies. My patients like that if they’ve heard about something new, they can come knowing that I’ve already learned about it and have often tried it out so I can give them the latest information

Philosophy

In an area where a health-conscious population wants to go beyond treating the symptoms of facial aging to preventing them, Dr. Jill L. Hessler works tirelessly to educate her patients on everything from Fractional COlaser options and chemical peels to facelift and filler treatments. “I love that I get to work with such an educated population,” says Dr. Hessler, a double board-certified surgeon and adjunct professor at Stanford University. “My patients easily understand and get excited about the latest treatments, and it really feels like a partnership in positive transformation.“

About My Practice:

How do you stay up to date on new techniques?

I am frequently invited to lecture at facial plastic surgery conferences and it’s a great opportunity to speak with colleagues and hear the latest experiences with new technologies. Living and working in the Bay Area, where many laser companies began, also helps as these companies often come to me to evaluate their products. My patients like that if they’ve heard about something new, they can come into my practice knowing that I’ve already learned about it and have often tried it out as well so I can give them the latest information.

What health and beauty tip can help patients look their personal best?

While I do plenty of laser treatments to treat sun-damaged skin, prevention is the best way to stay looking youthful.

How does skin care play a role at your practice?

I emphasize skin care because any surgical procedure is going to look better on someone with great skin. I’m always talking to my patients about sunscreen. Apply it to your face as well as to your hands and chest.

What is your overall aesthetic philosophy?

I emphasize a comprehensive approach. I offer Botox®, fillers and noninvasive treatments with some of the newest devices and technologies like Ulthera® and different laser options in addition to surgery. People like to come to me because although I am a surgeon, I don’t necessarily think that surgery is the first and only answer for every case.

What is new at your practice?

I am excited to announce the opening of our new Aesthetic Center with more than 4,000 square feet of space that will house both a state-of-the-art surgery center and hair restoration center in addition to a minimally invasive face and body center with the latest lasers and devices.

About Me:

Why did you become a facial plastic surgeon?

During medical school I realized the power of surgery and being able to repair the body. I fell in love with reconstructive surgery and making patients look great and that morphed into my aesthetic practice.

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy the people I get to meet—men and women who have a great approach to life. In many cases, I get to know entire families as patients because one member will refer others to me.

What is your communication style?

I’m straightforward. I give an honest impression of what to expect before and after surgery. I provide a thorough post-operative plan so patients are prepared, and I like to involve the patient’s friends and family. Patients generally report their recovery wasn’t as bad as they anticipated.

Facelift Techniques

“I’ve performed all of the different facelift techniques so I know the strengths and limitations of each one. For a great result, it comes down to assessing the needs of the patient and determining the best treatment,” Dr. Hessler says. Severe laxity may require a full facelift while subtle early jowling could be treated with a mini-facelift and smaller incisions. Regardless of the option chosen, she says, “I avoid that whole pulled, artificial look.” In the past five to 10 years, researchers have realized through scientific study that it is not just sagging skin but also loss of volume that affects the way we age. “The goal is to restore the tissue back to its original position and fullness so we lift in a vertical direction to counteract gravity instead of the lateral, backward pulling of the past,“ Dr. Hessler says. “I complement facelift procedures with fat transfer to restore volume back to more youthful levels. The advantage is that it’s natural and appears to enhance the texture of the skin.”

FAQ's

Q. How can I eliminate my under-eye bags?

What our experts say:

Especially concerning under-eye bags, there is a strong hereditary component that may make your eye area age faster than the rest of your face. I’ve worked on patients in their 30s who had significant laxity and bagginess under their eyes. Depending on your individual case, lower lid blepharoplasty may be able to help. We can correct baggy, protruding and loose skin and have a significant impact on your overall look without drastically changing your individual characteristics. As with any surgery, it’s important to go to a surgeon who specializes in this area.
