As award-winning actress Renee Zellweger stepped out onto the red carpet, the buzz was not about her dress, her hair, or her latest movie. Instead, it was about her face. Zellweger is being confronted with endless questions about her recent transformation and many believe it involved injectables. We turned to the experts for their thoughts.

While Zellweger attributes her new look to a refreshed outlook on life, her appearance looks severely altered, especially her eyes and brows. According to Troy, MI, plastic surgeon Anthony Youn, MD, Renee is “missing her arched brows and that tilt to her outer eyes. Her cheeks, lips, nose and jawline don’t appear to have changed. Her eyebrows have dropped and are flat, straight and unruly and the corners of her eyelids have descended. In my opinion, she probably had injections of a neurotoxin in her forehead. Although a little botulinum toxin can smooth the forehead, overinjecting can cause the eyebrows to drop and the eyelids to look heavy.”

Dr. Youn says botulinum toxins can be very powerful when injected off-label in the forehead to reshape the brows. “A small change—even just a few millimeters—in the brows can make a drastic change in your appearance because the facial expressions are altered.”

If you’re going to have Botox, Dysport or Xeomin used off label, start off conservatively and go slow. “One to two weeks later, go back to your doctor to make sure the result is what you want. If your brows are already arched or dramatic and toxins are used across the entire forehead, there’s a good chance that the brow is going to drop and you’ll look different,” says Dr. Youn.

Always choose a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist that is qualified to perform injectables. It is imperative to communicate to your doctor what your aesthetic goals are so that you are happy with the end result and still look like yourself post-procedure. “The majority of patients that have procedures done are very happy with their results. Be upfront and communicate your needs and wants with your doctor so that you are on the same page,” says La Jolla, CA, plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD.

Zelwegger stepped back into the public spotlight since debuting her new look with an appearance at the ALS Association Golden West Chapter’s annual One Starry Night benefit in Los Angeles this past Monday. Though she hasn’t confirmed that she had cosmetic work done, we must admit that she looked young and fresh faced on the red carpet.
