One of the most influential makeup artists of our time, Dame Pat McGrath sees and creates trends years ahead of their time. She sees beauty in colors and textures like a true artist, and her understanding of skin tone complexities is unparalleled. Her latest launch, Divine Blush, showcases this knowledge: After more than 30 years in the business and too many fashion shows to count, McGrath knows how blush should look and feel on the skin.
“I’m obsessed with blush,” McGrath said on a Zoom meeting yesterday. “This one is everything to me, and it comes in nine shades—from bare all the way to bold.” The formula, which launches late May, uses an innovative hybrid technology that combines pressed powder pigments with skin-care ingredients for an emollient sensation on the skin. “It has a silky-velvet finish that’s really petal-soft and adheres to the skin beautifully and really gives you full apple cheeks,” McGrath described, noting that the new blush will be part of the permanent collection. “It comes in two finishes: demi matte and satin, which has golden pearl in it, and they both blend beautifully.”
McGrath said a lot of testing was done to make sure they work on all skin tones, including a lot of backstage testing during fashion week this year. “At Miu Miu [F/W 2021], Miuccia wanted the girls to look fresh and outdoorsy on the ski slopes, so we used Cherish and Lovestruck on the cheeks, and the girls looked major,” she recalls. “At Michael Kors [his 40th Anniversary show], Naomi was wearing Electric Boom and Cherish, and she looked absolutely incredible.”
As for application, McGrath said the classic way to apply blush is on top of powder, but the editorial way is to put foundation on, then blush, and then powder on top. “This gives a real marriage to the skin.”
