Interest in Botox—the gold standard in neurotoxins—is rising among men, with the numbers back it up. The Harley Street Skin Clinic in London recently reported that searches for “Botox for males” surged by 3300% from January to September 2024, according to data sourced from Google Trends. So, what’s driving the increase? “As societal norms around self-care and cosmetic procedures evolve, it’s no surprise that we’re seeing a sharp increase in men turning to Botox, or ‘Brotox,’ as it’s often called,” says London cosmetic doctor and co-founder of The Harley Street Skin Clinic, Dr. Aamer Khan. “The stigma surrounding men and cosmetic treatments has significantly decreased, largely due to the influence of social media and the visibility of male public figures openly discussing their experiences with Botox.” Ahead, Dr. Khan dives deeper into how Botox differs from men to women, the most common areas men are getting Botox and more.

What factors are driving the increase in men opting for Botox?

“The rise in men opting for Botox is largely driven by social media and the growing visibility of male public figures undergoing treatments. Additionally, workplace pressures to maintain a youthful appearance, combined with the convenience of quick, non-invasive procedures like Botox, are key factors. Men are realizing these treatments are not just for women.”

How does Botox treatment differ from men to women?

“Men generally have thicker skin and stronger facial muscles, which means Botox dosages and techniques need to be adjusted for optimal results. The goal with male Botox treatments is often to preserve a more natural, masculine appearance by targeting specific areas like the forehead or between the brows without over-smoothing the face.”

What are the most common areas of concern for men seeking Botox?

“For men, the most popular areas for Botox treatments are the forehead, frown lines (between the eyebrows), and crow’s feet around the eyes. Many also seek Botox for functional reasons like reducing excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), which can be a major confidence boost in professional settings.”

What are the long-term benefits of Botox?

“When done correctly, Botox can help maintain a youthful, refreshed appearance over time. However, overuse or incorrect administration can lead to a ‘frozen’ look or imbalance in facial expressions. It’s essential for men to approach Botox with moderation and to seek experienced practitioners who understand male facial anatomy.”

How has the rise of Brotox impacted the cosmetic industry?

“The surge in demand for male Botox has prompted the cosmetic industry to expand its services and marketing towards men. Many clinics now offer male-focused treatments and tailor their approach to better suit male clients’ needs, such as subtle, natural-looking results that enhance, rather than change, their appearance.”
