At 55, Madeleine Stowe is striking and it’s been more than 20 years since she starred in Short Cuts and The Last of the Mohicans. Ageism in Hollywood is no secret, and she is taking center stage in uncharted territory—at least in terms of how society views age in relation to beauty.

From exercises to skin care, here are her beauty musts that keep her looking and feeling amazing.

Fresh-Faced Secret

“Generally, if my skin is looking good, I prefer to wear nothing on it. I think naturally glowing skin is really important. No makeup or product can compete with that.”

Anti-Aging Advice

“My mother told me: ‘Stay out of the sun and don’t wrinkle your forehead.’ She used to scream when I made that expression that crinkles it. Now everyone thinks I’ve had Botox, and I have to make that face to prove I haven’t.”

Strange Beauty Secret

“I do facial exercises. Those help a lot!”

Skin-Care Cure

“Sleep and water. I like to stick with things that have worked for years. They are the two best things out there for your skin.”

Style Wish

“I wish I knew how to do my hair; I truly don’t. Wearing it down is easy for me, and that’s why you see it like that a lot. I want to learn more tricks for wearing it up and changing it up.”

Makeup Miracle

“I’m fond of Giorgio Armani Maestro. It’s very sheer and you never have to put on powder when you wear it. On set, I  use Armani Luminous Silk Foundation.”

Skin-Care Savior

“Staying out of the sun is important, but you can’t cloister yourself. I love Jan Marini sunscreen. You can’t feel it when it’s on and it works really, really well.”

Fitness Routine

“I hike and do Pilates, but I don’t overdo it. I’m naturally a little lazy, which I think works to my advantage. I’m a big believer in not overexercising. The strain wears your skin down and ages you.”

Internal Elixirs

“I don’t take vitamins at all. I should, but I’m really, really lazy about it, although I’m better about taking omegas. They are terrific for the skin.”

Food No-No

“I try to stay away from sugar. There’s a lot out there that says it decimates the skin.”

Ingredient Must

“I use Retin-A. Retinols are wonderful for the skin.”

Diet Do

“I like to try a variety of foods and not be bored. I wish I could be vegan but I’m not and I can’t. I’ve tried and I’ve gotten very, very weak.”

Detox Don’t

“I think juice cleanses and all of those detoxes are total BS.
I love fresh juices and I drink them, but can anyone really explain to me what a toxin is? The whole colonics thing is ridiculous to me—and, when you are done, then what? You end up back where you began.”
