When you’re looking to hit the reset button on your skin, whether it’s removing dark spots or smoothing out acne scars, laser treatments do the trick. And with recent technological advancements, they’ve become even more powerful. Enter: the PiQo4 from Lumenis, which stands apart from others on the market in that in uses non-thermal energy to target discoloration. Basically, if you have pigment issues, this is the laser treatment to try.

Unveiled at last weekend’s American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) annual meeting, the FDA-approved laser is the most advanced of its kind when it comes to treating multiple types of pigment issues, including age spots, sunspots, melasma, tattoo removal, uneven skin tone and vascular lesions such as birthmarks. Plus, it can be used on all skin types and colors, whereas many other lasers exclude certain skin tones due to possible side effects that actually make pigment problems worse.

According to New York dermatologist David J. Goldberg, MD, who’s experienced much success with the new laser (the proof is in his before-and-after pictures below), PiQo4 is the only laser in the U.S. that has four wavelengths and the ability to deliver both nanosecond and picosecond pulses. “This combination of pico and nano wavelengths allows the laser to uniquely treat melasma, which is something no other single laser can do.”

It also offers up to 15 spot sizes, ranging from 2 mm to 15.5 mm, so it can treat larger dark spots and tattoos than any other laser—15 mm is the largest spot size in the industry—and because it can address a larger area, treatments are now faster than before, too. I have yet to try the laser myself, but Dr. Goldberg says there’s hardly any pain involved and zero downtime. Plus, as the treatment works to combat pigment concerns, it’s also helping to boost natural collagen production in the skin, which can make it look more youthful. The best part? It’s already available in select doctors’ offices (expect lots of expansion this year), so you don’t have to wait to reap the benefits!
