Before Kylie Jenner founded a fashion brand, she was an unofficial beauty influencer whose hair and makeup looks were on pretty much everyone’s mood board a decade ago. If you were active on Instagram in 2014 during her “King Kylie” era, you likely remember when she had the ends of her hair dip-dyed blue and alternated between a short, blunt bob and long extensions. Now she’s opening up about what caused her to switch up her look so often at the time.
Jenner recently spoke to Harper’s Bazaar about the newest collection to debut from her fashion brand, Khy. During the interview, she briefly discussed experimenting with different hairstyles and colors when she was a teenager, saying that it’s “a part of who I am.”
“I think that I’m kind of a chameleon with my style; I love to play,” Jenner said. “I’ve been like that since I was 16. I changed my hair color like once a week and cut my hair off and then put a wig on or put extensions in; and I’ve always switched up my style.” Jenner continued, saying that her desire to consistently switch things up “bleeds into” what she creates at Khy.
The Kylie Cosmetics founder was pretty well-known for experimenting with color as a teenager. In a post shared on her website in 2015, she talked about the first time she dyed her hair at 16, saying that she colored it blue without asking her parents first. “After that, I’ve just had this addiction to changing my hair,” she wrote. “It makes me feel like a new person. I love feeling different, and I love leaving the house knowing that nobody has ever seen me this way.”
These days, Jenner pretty much sticks to her natural brunette color, though she did briefly switch things up with a messy blond updo for a recent promo video she filmed for Khy. TBH, we wouldn’t be too mad if King Kylie made a brief reappearance sometime in the future.
