With Labor Day behind us and a dip in temperatures approaching, it’s time to transition our closets, skin-care routines and manicures for fall. Lia Smith, OPI North American manager of education says fall’s nail trends will remind us of what we love most about the season: “Crackling logs in a fireplace, rich hot chocolate, deep night skies, cozy sweaters and the sparkle of the season.” Ahead, what to expect to see on everyone’s tips this fall.

Cozy Colors

“The shades that will be trending this fall will evoke warmth and convey rich tones, cozy comfort and a sense of calm,” says Smith. Galdina Jimenez, OPI North America education manager & capability, notes her clients are already asking for olive greens and rusty oranges, but says the two “big asks” as of late have been mustard yellow and navy blue. Get the look with OPI Midnight Mantra ($3) and Ochre to the Moon ($3), both part of the brand’s Fall Wonders Nail Lacquer Collection.

Earth Tones

For a more neutral take on deep hues, Hannah Lee, manicurist and content creator, says another look that is trending is a “coffee Skittle manicure,” which features a “range of coffee tones, from cream to a deep chocolate brown.” Lee favors shades like Sally Hansen’s Bare Dare ($6) and Mocha Me Crazy ($6); Smith reaches for the warm OPI Brown to Earth ($3), which she says “embodies warmth and depth.”

Shape Shifter

When it comes to nail shapes that will be trending big, Chaun Legend, Lottie London artist in residence, says coffin-shaped nails aren’t going anywhere this season. “It lends itself to most designs, colors and art as well as creating that standout moment as we transition into fall fashion. For those who aren’t confident with this shape, I also think almond-shaped nails will be super popular as always. Almond suits almost everyone and it’s really classic and low maintenance.”

Make it Matte

Along with these earthy, cozy tones, Jimenez says a big request during the fall and winter season is for a matte finish. “I really see that being a huge trend with these shades,” she adds. Achieving the look couldn’t be easier: Simply use a matte top coat in place of your high-shine finisher—we love Olive & June The Matte Top Coat ($9)—and let dry.

Metallics + Sparkle

High-shine, metal-forward looks are trending big from the runways to the streets. At Susan Alexandra’s NYFW Spring-Summer show, models sported everything from bright metallic green and teal—peep the next-level ORLY Clover and Over ($12.50) and Surfs You Right ($11), below—to vampy hues on their tips, and added pops of crystals and a high-shine finish with ORLY Shining Armor ($15) to add drama and catch the light.

Lee says metallic and gold-foiled tips are also going to be big. “They are amazing for any occasion and they are simple and easy to do.” According to Jimenez, “pops of gold on accent nails or specs of glitter or foil” is another huge trend, along with “metallics and deep, rich shades like green and brown.” For a blend of both, try Sally Hansen’s Adrenaline Crush ($8), or try your hand at a gold-foil manicure with these easy-to-use Gold Leaf Silver Flakes ($18).
