Count it up to a really bad round of allergies on the East Coast this spring (leading into summer), but I sort of can’t wear anything with fragrance anymore. Everything I spray makes me sneeze, and the next line writes itself but, it stinks.
Enter Ellis Brooklyn’s new SUN Body Mist ($45), available today on the Sephora app and tomorrow on the site. As everything founder Bee Shapiro does, it’s great—an unassuming “bright” scent with a hint of fruity notes that has cracked the code on summer—without being overly fragrant or flagrant for allergies.
“This past year or so I’ve been thinking of all different formats of scent and why we may prefer one over the other,” Shapiro shared with us. “I loved body mists when I was younger, but I wondered if this could be a category that could still embody that youthful, fun spirit—but take it to a whole new level. I wanted the fun, but I also wanted beauty and sophistication.”
The concept is smart, as SUN joins the brand’s SEA and SAND scents, which Shaprio says is pretty much her recipe for a perfect summer day. “From there, I thought of the essence of what each was. SUN, for me, was about the carefree aspect of summer—the optimistic feeling that there is much to celebrate. Without getting too cliche or literal, there’s a ‘solar’ aspect here. The notes are varied and interesting. There’s sweet clementine, but also orange flower water, pear blossom and a touch of vanilla and musk. Body mists are, by nature, more approachable and less complex. They are meant to be sprayed on liberally. I think of it like storytelling. I love a complicated drama, but sometimes a lighthearted film is just as satisfying.”
The bottom line: If “solar” had a scent this would be it…and it doesn’t mess with anything else you might be using, while successfully bringing a sophisticated mist back to the mix.
