I’ve loved Dove Body Wash for years, and when Dove presented a new version to myself and a bunch of other beauty editors last Fall, admittedly I was wondering, why fix something if is isn’t broken? But leave it to Unilever to dream up something better without compromising all the things OG fans of this product love so much. In an interview with Marcela Melero, vice president of Global Dove Skin Cleansing, I was filled in on all the changes.
There’s a New Formula
Powered by Unilever’s proprietary nano technology called 24-hour Renewing MicroMoisture, this revamped formula sets a new industry standard. According to Dove, this is the first body wash in the United States to use this technology, which not only moisturizes skin for 24 hours, but also contains millions of moisturizing microdroplets to simultaneously boost and help the skin retain that moisture. Key ingredients include stearic and palmitic fatty acids—all of the ingredients are from vegetable origin—that work with the skin’s microbiome to quench dryness.
During the presentation, I learned that 98 percent of ingredients in traditional body wash go down the drain, but Dove says this one goes into the skin. “As a brand with over 65 years of history, updating our formula and packaging to make our body washes even better than before to meet this need was no easy task,” says Melero. “That’s why this project has been in the making for some time, and why this new formula is truly revolutionary.”
…And a New Bottle
This is the first time Dove has upgraded its cult-classic Body Wash bottle in the 17 years it’s been on shelves. The colored cap remains a key element (differentiating each scent), but the cap itself has adopted an oval shape as a nod to the brand’s beloved Beauty Bar. The thing I love most about the new ergonomic and sleek design is that you can now stand the bottle upside down on its cap when you’re running low, like you would with ketchup.
“In addition to all of the benefits you’ve all come to know and love about Dove Body Wash, this update marks a complete transformation, both inside and outside the bottle,” Melero says. “We’re the number-one dermatologist-recommended body wash brand and a clear market leader. This is all a journey we continue to be on—we understand evolving preferences and we continue to meet unmet needs.”
There Are Three New Scents
The Body Wash comes in more than 20 different varieties, of which you probably best recognize Deep Moisture and Sensitive Skin. This year, there are three new options joining the roster, including Revitalizante with Cherry & Chia Milk (it smells amazing), which is the brand’s first option to launch in the U.S. with both English and Spanish on the bottle. The other two newbies are Calming with Oatmeal & Rice Milk, and Invigorating with Aloe & Eucalyptus Oil.
