When it comes to trying out new beauty products and treatments, I’m typically not too timid. I’ve floated in pitch-black salt tanks in the name of stress-relief, gone to the depths of the earth for a facial I heard would help with acne scarring, and I’ve been known to slather on some donkey, snake and snail creams if what it promises sounds good.
But one thing I’m not totally on board with: Trying out any type of hair product that remotely runs the risk of dirtying up my white towels at home.

That’s why I was positive Hask’s new Charcoal Purifying Deep Conditioner ($3) was not for me. Like the name suggests, it has charcoal and you can see the not-so-tiny specks in the mask the minute you open it. Its consistency is sort of a little sandy (although the scent is a divine, fresh-citrusy concoction) and there’s a note on the package that was screaming at me like a distress signal: “We promise the charcoal washes out.”
Despite all these tiny details making me take pause, I still went forward with using it. The results: Amazing, super-hydrated strands and I swear my split ends are gone. Even my scalp (bordering on an itchy, flaky mess before my shower) was cleaned up—and to my very pleasant surprise, my towels were left untainted.
