Bangs have always been a commitment, but what if the right cut made them feel less like a risk and more like a revelation? Enter U-bangs, the fringe style seen on Jennifer Lawrence, Jenna Ortega, Sabrina Carpenter and Selena Gomez, that’s making a strong case for being one of the most universally flattering haircuts of the moment. Ahead, we’re breaking down everything to know about the trend.

What Are U Bangs?

The premise is deceptively simple. “U-bangs are a type of fringe where the hair is cut blunt across the middle of the forehead and then gradually feathers down and out on the sides, creating a gentle U shape,” explains celebrity hairstylist Leanne Citrone.

The appeal isn’t just aesthetic—it’s architectural. According to Citrone, the shape does something traditional fringe simply can’t: “U-bangs accentuate the cheekbones and open up the eyes, framing the face more naturally and softly. It’s less harsh than a blunt bang.” That subtle curve makes all the difference, landing somewhere between polished and effortless, structured and lived-in.

Is This Cut Actually for Everyone?

Almost. Citrone says U-bangs are particularly ideal for rounder and heart-shaped faces, where the gradual feathering works with the face's natural contours rather than against them. "If you're a bang girl," she adds, "this is a more modern, sexy look"—an upgrade for anyone already committed to fringe who's ready for something with a little more dimension.

How Do You Wear U Bangs?

Styling is refreshingly low-maintenance. Citrone's approach: "Blow [bangs] really flat and straight in the middle, and have the sides feather out a little more." The result is a look that's sleek where it counts and relaxed where it matters.

To get there, a few key products help. Start with a light heat protectant before blow-drying, like Chris McMillan’s The Glassy Smooth Blowdry Spray ($36), to keep everything smooth and frizz-free. A small round brush (or a paddle brush for finer hair) will help press the center of the bangs flat while letting the sides fall naturally. Finish with a lightweight styling cream worked through the ends—we love dae Cactus Fruit 3-in-1 Styling Cream ($30)—to define that feathered shape without stiffness. Lastly, to keep your fringe fresh between wash days, reach for a lightweight, never-chalky dry shampoo like Crown Affair The Dry Shampoo ($48). Just brush it on and go.
