This year, contouring ruled center stage as it became the makeup trend to try. It first gained popularity on the face—contouring is the go-to for slimming the nose, chiseling out the cheeks and defining the forehead, lips and jawline—and offshoots of it soon followed. Before we knew it, we were seeing contouring being used on the chest, hands, legs and pretty much any other part of the body that could use a little fine-tuning.

While we won’t say that the days of contouring are one and done, we will say that there is a new makeup trend gaining traction and it’s the complete opposite of what you know contouring as. Coined “nontouring,” the look is all about soft, subtle makeup with a natural glow as opposed to super-shaded, heavy makeup. Similar to strobing, the technique uses makeup like highlighters and illuminators to create highlights on the face with a dewy finish.

The idea behind nontouring is to look like you have no (or very little) makeup on. Think Gigi Hadid or J. Lo makeup.

To get the look, apply primer, followed by a light, dewy foundation or tinted moisturizer and concealer just where needed. Then, apply highlighter to the high points of your face like the top of your cheeks, your browbone, above your lip and the tip of your nose. The result: perfectly illuminated skin that shows off your features without having to be a slave to blending in all that dark makeup.
