It’s no secret Kim Kardashian West has psoriasis. In fact, while she’s best known for her ultra-glamorous looks, her social media presence within the last few years has been peppered with tweets, posts and even interviews about her struggle with the skin condition, which Greenwich, CT dermatologist Lynne Haven, MD explains is a very common immune-related skin disorder that causes red, scaly patches. “It’s a lifelong genetic condition which can be flared by stress or infection,” adds Dr. Havens.

As seen here, the red, scaly patches cover her cheeks, hit below her eyes and around the nose. “By bringing awareness to the struggles of managing psoriasis, celebrities like Kim Kardashian have also shone a light on some of the new treatments we have for the condition,” says Dr. Haven, adding that these may include topicals, light therapy—Kim's treatment of choice—or biologic medicines.
