Kylie Jenner is making headlines yet again. But this time around, the spotlight isn’t on her for her Lip Kits or the constant question of, “Did she or didn’t she have plastic surgery?” but rather the resurrection of a once-popular makeup trend: shiny looking lids that boast a bit of gloss.
While the idea of wearing gloss on your eyes may not sound appealing, there’s a right way to do it so that it doesn’t leave your lids feeling sticky and tacky. According to jane iredale global educator Hannah Hatcher, the shiny, glossy lid is making a huge comeback after a long run with matte eyes. “Spring makeup is all about gloss: dewy skin and glossy lips and lids. The glossy lid trend really speaks to the story of fresh and dewy yet minimal while still packing a big punch.”

Achieving the look can be tricky, especially if you don’t know what to use and how to apply the products, and might not work for everyone. “The struggle with this look is getting that high-power shine without a super sticky feeling on the lid,” says Hatcher.
Here’s how she says to do it:
1. Prep your eyes. Hatcher says to start off by applying a netural-beige matte shadow all over your lid.
2. Apply color. Using a short, flat brush, apply gel or cream eyeliner or shadow in any color to the base of your lid from lash line to crease. “The darker the color, the more dramatic the final look will be.” Don’t worry about creating a perfectly blended lid at this point—it’s just about getting the product on your lids.
3. Blend it out. Next, use a clean crease brush and blend out the edges so that the cream becomes soft and almost smoky. Just make sure not to blend too much, which can cause you to lose the color.
4. Layer on the gloss. The hardest part of the look is applying the gloss (or oil) to your lids. “If you just use clear lip gloss, your eyelids will feel heavy and sticky. If you use Vaseline, the look will be too greasy. You want to use a mix of a clear or sparkly lip gloss like jane iredale PureGloss Lipgloss ($26) and Rosebud Salve ($6), which cuts down the sticky factor.” Tap the concoction over your lids and blend it into the edges.
