I’ve been on the CBD bandwagon for a while now, after heavily researching the topic for a story last year and testing just about every tincture on the market. So what is a tincture exactly? It’s an oil-based supplement that gets administered sublingual, meaning under the tongue, via a dropper. This allows the CBD and oil combo (it’s often mixed with MCT or grape seed oil) to be rapidly absorbed into the blood vessels for quicker relief of anxiety, but no “high” whatsoever.
Until recently, I relied on my tinctures to help me wind down before bed each night, or to help ease nervousness before a long or bumpy flight. Now, with the current state of the world, I’m relying on it more often as a natural remedy for general uneasiness. Of course it’s important to note that no supplement is a miracle worker, but CBD does help me, and many other people agree.
CBD supplements also come in multiple other formats, from gummies and capsules to foods and drinks, but I’ve found tinctures to be the easiest and most enjoyable delivery method. Each one has a different taste (I love the mint flavors) and dosage, so be sure to pick the one that suits you best. I often combine methods too when I need a little extra calm—a hot mug of CBD tea and a tincture before bed—and it works wonders. Curious to try it for yourself? Here are my five favorites.
Lord Jones Hemp-Derived CBD Tincture – Peppermint ($60)
Countless celebs look to Lord Jones supplements and topicals for anxiety and pain relief—the brand has become a mainstay in the CBD space since its launch in 2015. This broad-spectrum tincture delivers 10 mg of USA hemp-derived CBD and minty freshness (it also comes in a lemon flavor) into each dropper to help you reach the ultimate state of calm.
RE Botanicals Hemp 25mg Peppermint Tincture ($60)
The best-tasting one of the bunch in my opinion, this tincture is the the only one I don’t mind using after I brush my teeth at night because the minty flavor is very strong (in a good way!) and keeps my mouth feeling fresh. A blend of USDA certified-organic MCT oil and peppermint oil with and U.S.-grown, full-spectrum hemp, this tincture packs a higher dose—25 mg—of CBD into each dropper and always achieves the task of taking the edge off.
Feals 600mg ($75)
What makes this potent tincture special is its two-ingredient, no-additive formula—it’s just 30 mg of organically grown domestic hemp per dropper and coconut MCT oil—which is also the reason for my only gripe: the hemp-y taste. However, you do get used to it, and the results—reduced anxiety and sore joint/muscle pain relief—are well worth it. But, I’d love it if the brand made a mint version too!
Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil 17mg – Mint Chocolate ($75–$189)
The brand’s “fan favorite,” this tried-and-true, 17 mg tincture helps manage everyday stresses when taken in the morning and also promotes better sleep when taken before bed. The CBD comes from domestic hemp that is U.S. Hemp Authority Certified, which means it meets stringent standards and passed a strict third-party audit. Plus, it comes in three other flavor options—Lemon Twist, Orange Blossom and Olive Oil—but the Mint Chocolate is by far my top pick and so yummy!
Populum Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil 500 mg ($100)
Each dropper of this orange-flavored tincture boasts 20 mg of full-spectrum hemp extract plus omega fatty acid–rich grape seed oil, hempseed oil and coconut oil that boost the overall immune system. It also contains cold-pressed orange oil, which lends the citrusy taste. The brand also offers a subscription service to keep the CBD goodness coming month after month (and daily anxiety at bay)—each bottle typically lasts 30 days if used once a day.
