Getting ready for the Met Gala is no joke, and the celebrity guests who grace the famed red carpet know that it’s not just about the clothes you wear. Every inch of their bodies are on display on that red carpet, so some areas that usually might not be the focus are also buffed, polished and groomed. To ensure every nook and cranny of her face was ready, model Ashley Graham went for a full facial treatment, which included an intense laser nose hair zapping technique from her aesthetician Mzia Shiman.

NewBeauty reached out to Shiman about this odd, and slightly painful-looking beauty treatment, and she said this nose hair treatment was part of a bigger laser treatment to get Ashley ready for the big event. “It’s a Candela laser. Basically what I did on Ashley was a full laser tightening treatment on her face and neck. Then I just zapped a little bit on the front of the nose to get a little bit of the hair. We don’t touch the inside of the nose, but we can zap a few of the hairs that are sticking out that can be more noticible when she puts on makeup.”

As far as the rest of the full facial treatment, Shiman said she gave Ashley the works and the Instagram post only shows a few seconds of her major event skin care prep. “We did the Candela laser for skin tightening; we also did red LED light therapy on her face and body to reduce inflammation, followed by oxygen infusion to plump her skin where I want her to be plump.”

San Diego dermatologist Eugene Nowak, MD, says although nose hair zapping with a laser is not a traditional solution, there’s no harm in this technique as long as it is performed properly. “There are a wide variety of beneficial laser treatments available for skin enhancement, tightening, hair removal and more,” he says. “In the case of Ashley Graham’s treatment, the hair removal procedure is safe as long as the treatment is administered externally.”
