Beverly Hills dermatologist Rhonda Rand, MD travels a lot for meetings, lectures, celebrations and (not enough) vacations.

In between racking up the miles and staving off the stale airplane air as much as possible, Dr. Rand—who’s also been Angelina Jolie‘s go-to derm since she the actress was 11 years old—says she’s found that her most important must-pack skin-care item is her gentle facial cleanser

“I want my skin to feel clean, but not dry or allergic,” Dr. Rand says. “Never would I use a hotel soap on this face!”

Her second tip: Bring EVERYTHING, but that doesn’t necessarily mean overpack.

“I will bring what I need, but I take tiny, tiny containers or sample sizes,” she says. “Like I said, never use hotel anything. All I need is a skin allergy from [trying] something new—I’m very sensitive and have learned this the hard way—to really detour any trip plans. It’s so important to bring my facial cleaner, sunscreen, my body soap, my moisturizer, and all facial products.”

Considering that the scary stat of more than 2 million bars of partially used hotel soaps are thrown away every day in the U.S. is often thrown around, that derm-approved advice sounds pretty solid for the both the environment and sensitive skin types.
