YSL Beauté’s parent company L’Oréal is home to so many iconic lip products: Lancôme Juicy Tubes, Urban Decay Vice, Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro, and of course YSL Rouge Pur. So it’s no shocker that the beauty giant is launching one of the coolest lipstick innovations of late: Rouge Sur Mesure Powered by Perso.
At last year’s CES tradeshow, L’Oréal debuted a prototype device called the Perso Smart Skincare system that serves up a customized dose of skin-care cream or serum like a hand sanitizer dispenser. However, for 2021, the company has adapted the technology to create new shades of lipstick instead. According to YSL, the AI-powered system allows users to create thousands of shades of the YSL Velvet Cream Matte Finish Lipstick at home.
Using the Perso technology, users can create new shades of lipstick within a corresponding app. Choose from a shade wheel, upload a personal photo or rely on the expertise of YSL’s shade stylist, which uses a proprietary algorithm to recommend coordinating lip shades with any outfit. Then, just hit “Create,” and a patented, motorized system of color cartridges—red, nude, orange and pink that create thousands of possible shades—will manufacture your custom hue. The lip color won’t pop out in a sleek bullet—hopefully that’s coming in the future—but instead, it comes in a single serving that fits into a corresponding chic YSL compact and can be applied with a brush.
Click here to sign up for the limited pre-sale of the device ($299) as part of the brand’s Beta Tester Program, which will ship this spring—a full rollout of the device will be available later in the year. Plus, L’Oréal has said that it plans to launch additional formats of the Perso technology in 2021 as well, to create custom formulas for skin care and foundation.
