We know what you’re thinking-Gross! No way! But wait a minute; a newly released study has revealed that patients treated with maggot therapy had their wounds cleaned quicker than those who were treated with surgical therapy.

Maggots release an enzyme that eats away at dead tissue, but doesn’t affect healthy tissue. But even knowing how useful maggot therapy can be, we’re still a little grossed out by the idea of letting maggots eat away at our skin. Perhaps that’s why the patients in this experiment were blindfolded so the results wouldn’t be compromised.

This study got us really curious as to what types of creepy-crawly beauty treatments are out there. Further digging led us to maggot exfoliation. That’s right, you can put those little worms to work and get smooth, silky skin.

It doesn’t end with maggots. There are other beauty treatments that use little creatures too. The list includes fish pedicures, snakeskin to give toe and fingernails a textured look, and even bird poop facials.
