After a couple of years on hold due to the pandemic, dermatologists and skin-care brands emerge to celebrate new developments and gain fresh insight on well-trodden topics at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting (AAD). This year at the conference held in Boston, Massachusetts, one of the most buzzed-about innovations was Twyneo Cream from Galderma, a revolutionary combination of tretinoin and benzoyl peroxide to help treat acne.

What makes this new product so exciting is that it can cut out extra steps in your skin-care routine. “Some prescription acne treatments currently involve multi-step regimens because there is rarely a single treatment option that addresses the multiple causes of the skin condition,” says Caroline Robinson, MD, FAAD, founder of Tone Dermatology. “These complex regimens can be really challenging for people to adhere to, especially if there is a slow onset of noticeable results.”

Previously, benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin, two beloved acne-fighting ingredients, cannot be applied together or combined in a single container “because benzoyl peroxide oxidizes and degrades tretinoin,” explains Dr. Robinson. However, “due to newly patented microencapsulation technology, Twyneo Cream is able to combine benzoyl peroxide with the highest concentration of tretinoin available in one bottle.”

Many aspects of the Twyneo Cream are novel and exciting for both dermatologists and patients alike. According to Dr. Robinson, “people may see results in as little as two weeks with their skin continuing to clear over time,” providing immediate and long-lasting results for those suffering from acne.

In one trial, at 12 weeks, people using Twyneo Cream saw a 66% decrease in pimples across skin types and tones, says Dr. Robinson. She notes that in clinical studies, nine in 10 people continued using Twyneo Cream after the trial wrapped up.

These two ingredients are sometimes difficult to tolerate in high concentrations, but Dr. Robinson says Twyneo Cream “demonstrated mostly mild to moderate side effects that decrease over time.” However, she notes that Twyneo Cream increases sun sensitivity, so it’s essential to wear sunscreen.

Dr. Robinson says the two-in-one is especially great for those who struggle to adhere to more complex skin-care routines, from teenagers to busy parents, since it’s a once-daily treatment that can be used at any time of the day. It can be prescribed to anyone with facial acne over the age of nine.
