Indian actress and pop star wifey, Priyanka Chopra Jonas is not only known for her T.V. and film accolades, she’s also known for her striking good looks, hence her 2000 Miss World title. But, this week, after the glitz and glam of the Met Gala, Chopra got real on about the early 2000s plastic surgery mishap that launched her into a “deep depression.”
During an interview with Howard Stern for SiriusXM, the now 40-year-old got real about an early 2000s procedure to remove a nasal polyp that went wrong and left her face almost unrecognizable. “This thing happens, and my face looks completely different,” she says, “and I went into a deep, deep depression.”
As if her own strife weren’t enough, the aftermath of the surgery resulted in Chopra being fired from several movie projects and even being given the cruel nickname of “Plastic Chopra” amongst fans. Chopra explains that, at the time, she feared her career was over, but was persuaded by her doctor father to undergo a corrective procedure. “I was terrified of that, but he was like, ‘I will be in the room with you,'” she explains. “He held my hands through it and helped me build back my confidence.”
Luckily, the actress was working with Bollywood director, Anil Sharma, at the time, whom she credits for assuredly getting her back in front of the camera at a pace she was comfortable with. “I was supposed to play this lead, and I was shifted to a supporting character. That filmmaker was very kind,” she begins. “He, while the tide was against me, said, ‘It will be a small part but give it your all.’ And I did.”
