There are very few products out there with a cult following as large as beautyblender’s, but with every great product comes at least one downfall. For beautyblender, that downfall is that it’s just too darn difficult to properly clean.

In order to combat this, Twitter user @jaycoko decided to put her beautyblender in a container of soapy water and then put it in the microwave for one minute—a common technique for cleaning kitchen sponges. After the minute is up, the makeup sponge is removed from the cup looking squeaky-clean. Genius, right?

However, while this worked for multiple people, one Twitter user—as pointed out by Allure—didn’t exactly follow directions, leading to a major mishap. Instead of following along with the proper sponge cleaning steps, twitter user @VTT_torii didn’t place her makeup sponge in a cup of soap water before microwaving. Instead, she placed the whole thing into the microwave dry, leaving her with a completely melted beautyblender after the 60 seconds were up.

The moral of the story is that when trying anything from the internet—viral hacks included—be sure to follow all the instructions. Even then, there’s a chance it won’t work, so be mindful of the risk before you try it.
